Winter attractions in Kraków – the most beautiful Christmas market

Winter is the time when many Polish cities organize Christmas markets just before the holiday season. And so is Kraków with its Christmas market – the oldest and most famous event of its kind in Poland. During the fair located on the Main Market Square, you can purchase many products including local specialties, handcrafted wood and wool products showcasing the region. It is worth to try some local dishes like the grilled oscypek cheese, drink aromatic warm mulled wine called grzaniec or sweeten your life with the famous Christmas cake with walnuts and jam called przekladaniec krakowski.

The biggest attraction of the Kraków Christmas market however, is the carolers show. Walking through streets of the Main Square, you can also admire the competition of Christmas szopki also known as Christmas cribs. Each year Krakowians of all ages participate in a competition to create the most beautiful szopki, and the most beautiful ones are then put on a display in store and restaurant windows. An interesting attraction is also a living nativity scene arranged every year next to the Franciscan church. The fair in Kraków usually starts at the end of November and lasts until the end of Christmas.

Winter in Kraków – visiting Wawel

During your visit to Kraków, you can’t miss to see the Cathedral and the Wawel Royal Castle. The castle is located on the left bank of the Vistula River. It is open to the public throughout the year, however, opening hours are usually shorter during the winter. Please check the information available on the Wawel’s website in advance.
The Royal Castle for centuries was the headquarters of the Polish kings, which due to numerous looting, marches of foreign troops and fires was repeatedly rebuilt. This fact is confirmed by the multitude of architectural styles that come from many historical eras. At the Royal Castle you can visit the representative royal chambers created from the State Art Collections and private royal suites. The attraction of the castle is also the old armory and the Crown Treasury, presenting souvenirs left over from the dynasties of Polish kings.

While on Wawel, you can also visit the nearby Cathedral, which together with the Royal Castle forms the entire historic complex. It features a historical museum, the famous Zygmund Bell and the Royal Tombs.

If you are travelling with children, it is also worth going to the area of the Wawel Dragon. You can end your tour with a charming walk on the Vistula River, not forgetting to visit one of the atmospheric cafes or restaurants.

Winter in Kraków can be magical during the winter. Right in the heart of the city center, you can take advantage of staying at the boutique Grand Ascot Hotel, which thanks to its location is a great starting point for many attractions.
